Scavenge Skirmish Survive

Vehicles

With the volcanic winter having passed, overwhelmed by snow and drained of fuel, abandoned vehicles are an opportunity to scavenge for what might have been left behind from a time when supplies were more abundant.

When selecting vehicles, scale is very much a matter of personal preference that can reflect aesthetics, availability and cost. Vehicles in 1/56 scale can can look 'right' alongside the miniatures, especially when based for a snow-bound effect. Some 1/56 diecast vehicles are fairly readily available, though an element of research is often required if they have been manufactured to fit a box-size rather than to a true scale.

While the target scale is 1/56, to increase the range and variety of vehicles available, vehicles from 1/54 to 1/58 will be used.

Please note that the following measurements and calculations have indicative status only and so cannot be relied upon while vehicles are permanantly based or temporarily mounted on coins to equalise their height with a based miniature.

In the UK, the supermarket chain Sainsbury has retailed a line of "City Trucks" by "Car Club" that are in approximate 1/56 scale:

The flatbed construction lorry lends itself to conversion to a white-panel delivery lorry, with removal of a pair of wheels, roof bar lights, etc and the installation of a cargo body made from plasticard sheet.

A similar model has also provided the base vehicle for conversion into a tree surgeon's truck. As the back will take 2 minis, it will provide a raised firing platform in the middle of the road. This lorry had originally carried a skip, which became a separate tarrain piece.

From a local discount store: a model of a black Hackney Cab. It's not a perfect rendition but at 85mm long versus the 4570 of the LTI TX4, it approximates to 1/54 scale.

Made in Germany, "Siku Cars" are diecast vehicles that can be purchased via Ebay and other outlets. Some are to an advertised scale whereas others are box size, though for many vehicles some Ebay sellers include the advertised scale, a scale they have calculated, or the approx model length (from which an approximate scale can be worked out). A number seem to be available in emergency services format only, though civilianising them should only require removal of the roof light bar and a repaint. The vehicles are mainland European so are left-hand drive with opening front doors. The doors have very chunky hinges so if fully open tend to look detached from the car while they also lack the front door glass. Like the lorry above, the cars lend themselves to winterising, including snow effect and repainting. Examples include:

"Majorette" are another make of diecast vehicles that can be purchased via Ebay and other outlets. The vehicles are mainland European so are left-hand drive; they tend not to have opening front doors but some have opening boots or bonnets. Examples include:
